New member information session
This information session is for people interested in joining the Sunshine Coast Art Group pottery and art groups.
We have new member intakes 3 to 4 times a year. At the session we will give potential new members details about how we operate and everything you need to know to become a member.
New members to the pottery will also have to undertake a half day induction.

Intermediate Glazemaking with Marc Sauvage (9 Aug 2026)

The Intermediate Glazes course has been developed for students who have successfully completed the Introduction to Glazes and would like to extend their learning and experience. By way of some chemistry theory, practical tests & experimentation, participants will develop new knowledge & understanding of the UMF (Unity Molecular Formula) and the primary roles that fluxes as well as Alumina/Silica ratios play in the development of ceramic glazes. Some of the other topics covered include:

· A practical and theoretical investigation of the Ian Currie method of glaze testing and development, using understanding of the roles of specific fluxes as well as Alumina and Silica ratios in creating desired glazes.
· The Stull map and its role in helping predict glaze behaviour (e.g., glossy vs. matte), compare recipes, troubleshoot problems (like crazing or pinholing), and design new glazes with specific characteristics.
· Change glazes from gloss to matte and reverse
· Glaze consistencyfactors such as Specific Gravity and viscosity, use flocculation and deflocculation to fix hard-panned and gelled glazes.
· Glaze faultsand how to fix them
· Using software from sites such as Glazy.org and Digitalfire to alter glazes, create new ones and, substitute materials.
· Create Line Blends to fix glaze problems, develop new glazes, blend from one colour to another and adjust glazes for different temperatures
· Developing “Specialty” Glazes (Matte/Gloss, Cr/Sn Pinks, Celadons, Oribe, Zinc-crystalline, Float, Metallic, Majolica, Crackle etc)
· Colour Blendingusing multiple oxides & stains.

Participants will require access to a home computer, laptop or tablet, along with Internet access both at home and during some lessons at SCArt (can connect to Sunshine Coast free WiFi at SCArt). A more complete list of requirements will be forwarded upon enrolment.

Intermediate Wheel Throwing with Marc Sauvage (10 Aug 2026)

This 10 week course is recommended for potters that have undertaken an introduction wheel throwing course and have 6-12 months’ wheel throwing experience. Students must already be able to centre clay and create simple forms on the wheel.

The course represents an opportunity for students to progress and consolidate their skills to produce a variety of more complex forms with growing confidence.

As a “project-based” skill-development course, it focuses on learning and refining skills such as working with larger amounts of clay, throwing taller, shaping/bellying and collaring-in, repetitive throwing, throwing and turning feet, faceting & carving, handles: pulling, hand-built and extruded, shaping rims and spouts, as well as creating assemblages from thrown forms.

Projects covered include high, medium and low-profile bowls, “sets” of cups, chip’n dip platters, one-piece lidded containers, and tall necked bottle forms.

At the conclusion of the course, students throw and assemble a teapot or can focus on another project of their choice.

Most sessions will commence with weighing out and kneading of clay, followed by a demonstration of the lesson’s targeted skill/s and projects.

Students will then work at their own wheel, practising the skills and using the time to complete as much of the project as they can with teacher supervision and assistance.

Thrown forms will be taken home by the student so they can manage appropriate drying of the work for processing/turning the following week.

Whilst most projects can be completed in course time, it is expected that students will spend some extra time (either at home or the SCArt studio) refining, practising or finishing projects.

This is an informal self-managed group for members interested in practising portrait painting. All mediums are welcome.

Members can either work on their own project or practice their skills with a volunteer sitter.

Table and standing easels are available. Please bring your own materials.

Marc Sauvage's Working with Simple Moulds (11 Aug 2026)

Simple Molds, taught by Marc Sauvage, runs over 10 weeks and is mainly aimed at Beginning to Intermediate clayworkers. As the name suggests, the course takes an uncomplicated approach to the making of molds using both found and sourced materials such as timber, foam, cardboard, plastic and plaster, and those completing the course will have completed a variety of drape, slump, hump, press and casting molds. A range of decorating techniques appropriate for the molds created are also explored, both by demo and participation, including textures (created and found), coloured slips and clays, paper transfer & stencils, as well as coloured glazes. The course finale is an introduction to slip-casting with participants completing a simple one-piece cup/tumbler/cylindrical form, then casting from the mold using slip made by themselves using their own dried clay body.

A reasonable level of fitness is required to manage bags of clay and buckets of plaster. The ability to throw basic shapes on the wheel is an advantage, as simple thrown forms can be used to make molds, but it is not a requirement.

By the end of this course students should be able to:

Make a variety of molds suitable for the production of simple ceramic forms, both flatware and 3-dimensional.
Investigate the use of a variety of materials, both found and sourced, such as timber, foam, plastic and plaster to produce simple molds such as drape, hump, press, and slip-cast (in this course, we will make a simple one-piece mold as an introduction to the process of slip-casting. The “All things Plaster” course will involve a more in depth learning about multi-piece slip-casting molds.)
Make your own casting slip from a dry clay body.
Mix casting plaster using the correct ratios and techniques for removal of bubbles and effective pouring. Make different coloured slips using ceramic stains
Experiment with a range of decoration techniques and materials suitable for use in conjunction with the molds created, such as textures (texture rollers, stamps and found objects), coloured slips and clays, stencils and underglaze transfers.

A list of requirements will be sent out after completion of enrolment in the course. You will also be responsible for the firing of your own work either at home or by progressing it through the SCArt firing system.

· A practical and theoretical investigation of the Ian Currie method of glaze testing and development, using understanding of the roles of specific fluxes as well as Alumina and Silica ratios in creating desired glazes.
· The Stull map and its role in helping predict glaze behaviour (e.g., glossy vs. matte), compare recipes, troubleshoot problems (like crazing or pinholing), and design new glazes with specific characteristics.
· Change glazes from gloss to matte and reverse
· Glaze consistencyfactors such as Specific Gravity and viscosity, use flocculation and deflocculation to fix hard-panned and gelled glazes.
· Glaze faultsand how to fix them
· Using software from sites such as Glazy.org and Digitalfire to alter glazes, create new ones and, substitute materials.

Intermediate Wheel Throwing with Marc Sauvage (7 Sep 2026)

The course represents an opportunity for students to progress and consolidate their skills to produce a variety of more complex forms with growing confidence.

Projects covered include high, medium and low-profile bowls, “sets” of cups, chip’n dip platters, one-piece lidded containers, and tall necked bottle forms.

At the conclusion of the course, students throw and assemble a teapot or can focus on another project of their choice.

Most sessions will commence with weighing out and kneading of clay, followed by a demonstration of the lesson’s targeted skill/s and projects.

Students will then work at their own wheel, practising the skills and using the time to complete as much of the project as they can with teacher supervision and assistance.

Thrown forms will be taken home by the student so they can manage appropriate drying of the work for processing/turning the following week.

Whilst most projects can be completed in course time, it is expected that students will spend some extra time (either at home or the SCArt studio) refining, practising or finishing projects.

By the end of this course students should be able to:

Make a variety of molds suitable for the production of simple ceramic forms, both flatware and 3-dimensional.
Investigate the use of a variety of materials, both found and sourced, such as timber, foam, plastic and plaster to produce simple molds such as drape, hump, press, and slip-cast (in this course, we will make a simple one-piece mold as an introduction to the process of slip-casting. The “All things Plaster” course will involve a more in depth learning about multi-piece slip-casting molds.)
Make your own casting slip from a dry clay body.
Mix casting plaster using the correct ratios and techniques for removal of bubbles and effective pouring. Make different coloured slips using ceramic stains
Experiment with a range of decoration techniques and materials suitable for use in conjunction with the molds created, such as textures (texture rollers, stamps and found objects), coloured slips and clays, stencils and underglaze transfers.

A list of requirements will be sent out after completion of enrolment in the course. You will also be responsible for the firing of your own work either at home or by progressing it through the SCArt firing system.

Wheel Throwing Introduction - Try Before You Buy (20 Sep 2026)

Keen to try wheel throwing, but don’t want to commit to a full course in case you are not sure it will be for you?

Then why not enrol in our ‘Wheel introduction-try before you buy class’ taught by Marc Sauvage. It’s a 4 hour workshop where you will be taken through the processes of preparing your clay for wheel throwing, centring clay on the wheel, and the basic fundamentals of throwing a small simple bowl.

This experience will provide you with a strong fundamental start to wheel throwing should you wish to pursue this technique further, but either way you will have a fun messy time.

All course materials and equipment will be supplied. The firing of your pot is also included.You will need to bring an apron, a towel and wear closed in shoes for safety.

Advancing Wheel Throwing with Marc Sauvage (6 Oct 2026)

The primary reason and focus of this course is to reinforce and refine the skills already developed by students, whilst providing them with the opportunity to practice, challenge and extend their abilities into new areas of interest.

In the first half of the course, following previous lesson formats, students will be initially encouraged to try a number of extension activities and projects:

· Creating oval forms from thrown shapes
· Blending multiple coloured clays to explore neriage techniques in a variety of forms
· Joining multiple thrown shapes to create larger forms
· Throwing and altering closed forms such as spheres and donuts
· Throwing with larger weights

During the first few weeks, students will have time to discuss, with the tutor, the proposed direction of their future ceramic skills and interests, to develop, with assistance, a potential weekly proposal for the second half of the course.

The tutor will then work with students at this time, both individually and with the group, helping them to achieve their goals whilst challenging them to extend their throwing and design skills. A variety of potential surface finishing skills and techniques will be considered in discussion for the final work.

Additional event information
Initially, class sessions will follow the style of the previous courses: Beginners and Intermediate Wheel, that is, starting with tutor demonstration and following with students endeavouring to repeat the processes and create the forms demonstrated.

Then, combining short lecture-style presentations, some sketching, group and one-on-one discussions, group and one-on-one demonstrations, along with handouts for ideas and quick homework tasks, the tutor will gradually direct students toward their intended goals and development of a plan in steps which can be reasonably implemented in the remaining 5 weeks.

As it is assumed that participants are familiar with the SCArt firing and glazing processes and protocols, individuals will be responsible for the fired completion of their own work.

Plaster Mould Making and Slip Casting with Marc Sauvage (11 Oct 2026)

Plaster Mouldmaking and Slip Casting runs over 10 weeks and is mainly aimed at Intermediate to Experienced clayworkers, covering mouldmaking and casting in greater depth than “Simple Moulds”. Initially, this course covers similar ground as the previous one, exploring a variety of drape and hump moulds as well as some of the same decorating techniques using coloured slips, clays and textures. Following this, it advances on to one-piece and 2-piece moulds, addressing the various types and use of cottles, accurate plaster-mixing ratios, mould release agents, keying surfaces for correct alignment, undercuts in found forms, and using a variety of media to create the master form. This part of the course is intensive and physical, mixing larger plaster amounts, requiring significant attention to fine detail and is therefore recommended for participants with reasonable stamina, fitness and patience. The last 2 weeks of the course is allocated for participants to create a more complex form, perhaps requiring more than 2 parts, and producing a form of their own design or choice with assistance from the tutor.

The registration price of this course includes one bag of clay and one bag of plaster per student.

Training objectives:

Identify safety aspects of working with clay and around a pottery studio.
Learn and practice the methods of:
- Weighing and wedging clay in preparation for its use.
- Applying the clay to the wheel.
- Controlling the pottery wheel speed and positioning of the potters arms to facilitate throwing.
- Centering the clay on the wheel.
- Opening up the clay.

It is expected that each student should be able to make at least one of: a cylinder shaped mug, a plate, a bowl and a lidded bowl by the end of this course.

Included in the workshop cost is one best piece from each category which will be bisque fired by the studio, then glazed in class by the student, before having its final glaze firing by the studio. If students would like additional pieces fired, normal firing costs will be incurred at SCart, or outside firing services can sourced by the student.

Beginner Wheel Throwing with Marc Sauvage (30 Nov 2026)

Recommended for:For all beginners to wheel throwing. No experience is necessary.

Training objectives:

Identify safety aspects of working with clay and around a pottery studio.
Learn and practice the methods of:
- Weighing and wedging clay in preparation for its use.
- Applying the clay to the wheel.
- Controlling the pottery wheel speed and positioning of the potters arms to facilitate throwing.
- Centering the clay on the wheel.
- Opening up the clay.
- Pulling up the clay walls.
- Shaping and refining the form with ribs, and other pottery tools.
- Removing the form correctly from the wheel to conserve its shape.
- Making a handle.
- Making a lidded form (this will depend on student’s level of progression through the other stages).
- Recognising the clay stage of ‘leatherhard’ ready for trimming the form.
- Trimming techniques to finish off the form including making a ‘base foot’.
- Recognising the importance of identifying your pottery form ready for firing.

It is expected that each student should be able to make at least one of: a cylinder shaped mug, a plate, a bowl and a lidded bowl by the end of this course.

Advancing Wheel Throwing with Marc Sauvage (1 Dec 2026)

In the first half of the course, following previous lesson formats, students will be initially encouraged to try a number of extension activities and projects:

· Creating oval forms from thrown shapes
· Blending multiple coloured clays to explore neriage techniques in a variety of forms
· Joining multiple thrown shapes to create larger forms
· Throwing and altering closed forms such as spheres and donuts
· Throwing with larger weights
