This 10-week course represents an opportunity for students who have completed the Beginning Throwing course (or equivalent) to progress and consolidate their skills into making a variety of more complex forms with growing confidence. Ideally, target students are able to centre clay and create simple forms on the wheel.

As a “project-based” skill-development course, it focuses on learning and refining skills such as working with larger amounts of clay, throwing taller, shaping/bellying and collaring-in, repetitive throwing, throwing and turning feet, faceting & carving, handles: pulling, hand-built and extruded, shaping rims and spouts, as well as creating assemblages from thrown forms. Some of the projects covered include high,

medium and low-profile bowls, “sets” of cups, platters, lidded containers, and tall forms. At the conclusion of the course, students make and assemble a teapot or can focus on another project of their choice.

Whilst most projects can be completed in course time, it is expected that students will spend some extra time (either at home or the SCArt studio) refining, practising or finishing projects. Whilst no time has been allocated for glazing, students can access the studio glazes and firing facilities in their owntime in order to complete the work.

PASTELS AND PETS with Lizzy Connor (4 weeks)

Painting pets with pastels can be a delightful and rewarding artistic endeavor. This course will explore creating images of some of our best friends with the lovely medium of soft pastel.

This workshop will investigate the properties and limitations of pastel including mark making, blending with fingers and brushes on small pieces of canson and colourfix.  We will be considering colour schemes, as there is little opportunity to mix colour, and what impact does the colour of the paper have on the colours of the pastel, the lightness or darkness of the paper will determine whether your working on shadows first or leaving your lights out.

Participants are encouraged to bring an image of their best fur friend, or feathered friend.

“Dots and Dashes” A Pointilistic view of the World with

    Mellissa Read-Devine

    17 – 18 May 2025

This workshop will help you add vibrancy to your painting and improve your use of colour.  Learn brushwork techniques used in impressionist styles.  The workshop is suitable for all levels.

With her own work often described as “macropointilist” Mellissa is keen to help you be able to find your own style and will encourage you to paint bolder and brighter, with an emphasis on vibrant colourful brushstokes. The weekend will be spent painting your choice of subject from your photos and sketches.

Day 1 will be spent exploring the use of brushes and other tools to make semi abstract works inspired by flowers.

Day 2 will be encouraging a different scene, perhaps an abstracted andscape or a continuation of the floral theme depending on your own tastes.

Mellissa Read-Devine is a Fellow of the Royal Art Society of NSW and is the Acrylics tutor at the RAS Art School. www.readdevine.com.  Mellissa is joining us from Sydney to deliver this workshop.
